Jack Brenegan began his basketball coaching career at the age of 22, as a high school varsity assistant coach and junior high school head coach. After stops at Kiel High School and Woodstock (IL) High School, his travels led him to MATC in 1979. In his ten years as MATC's head men's basketball coach, he compiled an impressive 218-104 overall record, including an outstanding 89-36 conference mark. Under Jack's guidance, the Trojans won 4 WTCC championships and 10 straight WJCAA regional titles. At the helm, he led MATC to 7 regional tournament appearances; taking the school to its first and only regional title and national tournament appearance in 1986. He has coached 20 All-Conference, 13 All-State, and 3 All-Region players. One of his players was also named an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
In the Spring of 1991, Jack took over the men's golf program and led them to the NJCAA Region XIII title and National Tournament. In 1992, two of his golfers qualified for Nationals with one earning NJCAA All-American honors.
During the past years, Jack has also overseen the growth and development of the MATC athletic program and facilities. He received the Wisconsin Technical College Conference Sportsperson of the Year award in 1989-90, the Gold Award for Service and Achievement from the Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association in 1993, and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association in 1989.
One of Jack's peers had this to say on his behalf, "Regardless of which of his many hats he happens to be wearing; teacher, coach, athletic director, co-worker, or boss, the underlying beat of his personality is friendship." According to another peer, "Jack is patient, kind, and above all else fair. He will always go the extra mile for anyone. I am so pleased that I had the privilege to work with Jack."
Jack and his wife Barb are always present at MATC athletic events. They have three children; Lauri, John, and Paul as well as one grandson, Jack Ryan.
